Light by Jeff Key

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ~ John 1:5

As I sat down to write this on Monday December 21st, it was not lost on me that this was the day with the least amount of daylight for the year.  I guess in some ways this year has seemed bleak from almost the beginning.  But no matter what has happened, we the children of the light have persevered.  We have found ways to worship - maybe not always the way we would like, but we have done it.  We have also lost many loved ones - but we keep their lights burning in our hearts.  As the verse says, “light shines in the darkness,” which is what we need to do each and every day.
This past Thursday we celebrated Christ’s birthday – partially in daylight and partially in darkness.  However when we celebrated in darkness we pierced that darkness with a light that was seen by others, whether with a wax candle or a more modern version – a cell phone.  We let our lights shine and the darkness was overcome with a blazing light shining up to, and down from, heaven.

Dear Lord, we are to be shining examples of Your love here on earth.  Help us to live into that each and every day.  Let our lights and lives push the darkness deep into the background, leaving the paths to you bathed in bright light for all to see and follow. Amen.
